Asian markets traded mostly lower in early deals on Thursday, driven by profit taking and risk aversion amidst escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and surging crude oil rates. Hopes for peace derailed as the US and Iran exchanged strikes, directly dragging Bahrain and Kuwait into the crossfire and marking the most severe escalation since the April ceasefire. Disappointing technology sector forecasts, and expectations that central banks might need to hike interest rates to counter an energy-driven inflation shock, also pressured the Asian indices. Japan’s Nikkei plunged from record levels with the negative global cues and on hefty sell offs in export-heavy tech sector. Stronger local currency yen pressured export oriented sectors.

Nikkei tumbled by 972.13 points or 1.42% to 67,430.00, Straits Times down by 71.57 points 1.39% to 5,066.67, Hang Seng dipped by 384.21 points or 1.52% to 25,249.00, Taiwan weighted declined by 440.63 points or 0.95% to 46,018.53, KOSPI Index wilted by 99.99 points or 1.14% to 8,701.50, Jakarta Composite plunged by 193.69 points or 3.26% to 5,747.38, and Shanghai Composite narrowed by 17.41 points or 0.43% to 4,066.56.

On the flip side, FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI index climbed by 13.76 points or 0.82% to 1,686.50.
